WhatsApp messages from Odoo with Meta-approved templates

WhatsApp

The Enterprise module where you connect your Meta WhatsApp Business Platform account and send messages with approved templates.

What it does

The WhatsApp module connects Odoo to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform. Documents such as quotations, point of sale receipts and event tickets are sent over WhatsApp; the reply that comes back opens in a Discuss chat window. Messages started by the company use a template approved by Meta, and the approval process runs on Meta's side. The module is Enterprise-only, and the setup takes many steps on Meta's side.

Setup on Meta's side

A Meta business account, a WhatsApp Business Platform account and a Meta app of the business type are required. A personal WhatsApp account or a WhatsApp Business app account does not work with this integration. The phone number is verified by SMS or a call, and because of Meta's fraud checks a payment method has to be added to the account.

Templates and approval

Templates fall into three categories: Marketing, Utility and Authentication. A template has to go through Meta's approval process before it can be used. After approval the templates have to be synced to the Odoo database; the approval or rejection result is notified by email.

Dynamic fields

Placeholders such as {{1}} and {{2}} are put in the template text and bound to model fields. The binding has to be done on the template's Variables tab. The field to bind to is found with the search box among the fields of the model the template applies to.

Incoming replies and the team

When the customer replies, a Discuss chat window opens and the configured users are notified. The window can be expanded to invite other users into the conversation. According to the Odoo documentation, if a user does not reply within 15 days, the customer's next reply goes to the configured users again.

We don't just install the module — we fit it to your business

ASON runs the setup steps with you, including the Meta business account, the Business Platform account and the webhook address; prepares your message templates with their dynamic fields and submits them for approval, and defines which users incoming replies go to.

Technical scope

Enterprise-only — the Odoo documentation states explicitly that it does not work on the Community edition

The Meta business account requires a personal Facebook account created at least one hour earlier
A payment method must be added to the Meta app
Template categories: Marketing, Utility, Authentication
Templates are synced to Odoo after Meta's approval
The webhook address must contain https:// and a valid domain name, and be reachable from outside
A permanent system user token is required in production; the temporary token is only for the setup
Until the app is switched to live mode, messages only go to the test numbers in the developer console
A test number can send messages to at most five recipients
Integrated apps: Sales (quotations), Point of Sale (receipts and invoices), Events (tickets)

Frequently asked questions

Does the WhatsApp module work on the Community edition?

No. The Odoo documentation states explicitly that the WhatsApp module does not work on the Community edition; the module depends on an Enterprise subscription. On a Community installation this application does not appear in the list. If your need falls on the WhatsApp integration, the license cost is shown as a separate line in the project quote. The account and template approvals on Meta's side are separate from that cost.

Can we use it from Türkiye?

There is no country-based restriction on the Odoo side; the setup runs off your Meta account and your verified number. The country-by-country availability of the WhatsApp Business Platform, the message pricing and the template rules are Meta's own policy. Before the decision to set it up, we need to check Meta's current conditions together through your account.

Will we pay a fee per message?

Message pricing is Meta's own policy and is not set on the Odoo side, so we do not quote you a price. Meta requires a payment method to be added to the account. Before the decision to set it up, we need to check the current conversation rates together through your account.

Can we send the customer whatever message we want?

No. Messages started by the company have to use a template approved by Meta; a template cannot be sent before it is approved. A template falls into one of three categories: Marketing, Utility or Authentication. Approved templates become usable after they are synced to Odoo. Variable fields let each message be personalized with the record's data, but the skeleton of the text stays tied to the approved template.

Can we personalize templates with our own record data?

Yes. Placeholders such as {{1}} and {{2}} are put in the template text and bound to model fields. The binding has to be done on the template's Variables tab. The field to bind to is found with the search box among the fields of the model the template applies to. The skeleton of the text still stays tied to the approved template.

Who does the message go to when a customer replies?

When the customer replies, a Discuss chat window opens and the configured users are notified. The window can be expanded to invite other users into the conversation. According to the Odoo documentation, if a user does not reply within 15 days, the customer's next reply goes to the configured users again; this is Odoo's notification behaviour.

Can we use our existing WhatsApp Business number?

The Odoo integration only works with WhatsApp Business Platform accounts; an account in the WhatsApp Business app is not compatible with this integration. Moving the number from the app to the Platform is a separate process that runs on Meta's side, and the Odoo documentation does not describe this migration. So the number migration step has to be planned together according to Meta's current guidance; alternatively, a separate number can be set up for the integration.
