Message history that sits on the records, and team channels

Every Odoo record has its own message history; team channels and direct messaging run in the same app.
What it does
Discuss does two jobs at once. The first is the record chatter: under a quotation, invoice or support record sit that record's messages, internal notes and file attachments. Followers of the record are notified of a new message. The second is team communication: channels, direct messages, voice and video calls. Because both are in the same database, correspondence that goes to the customer and internal notes stay visibly apart.
Record chatter
Almost every record in the database has a chatter. Log note is visible to internal users only; Send message goes out to external contacts as an email. File attachments are kept in the same area and can be downloaded by any user with access to the chatter.
Followers and notifications
The user who creates a record, or is assigned to it, becomes a follower automatically. Followers are also added as recipients of the message sent. If a follower should not receive that message, they have to be taken off the follower list before sending; this rule is explained to the team separately during the setup.
Channels and access
Channel privacy is set on the Privacy tab. Selecting an Authorized Group limits the channel to specific user groups, and group members can be made followers automatically. A channel is referenced from a record chatter with the # sign.
Canned responses
A shortcut and the long text that replaces it are defined. When the user types the shortcut, the text is inserted automatically. Canned responses can be used in Live Chat, Discuss, the record chatter and WhatsApp messages; the list is managed under Discuss > Configuration > Canned Responses.

Frequently asked questions
Can a message to the customer get mixed up with an internal note?
No, they are two separate buttons. Content written with Log note is visible to internal users only. Content written with Send message goes out to the record's followers as an email. Both stay under the same record and are shown apart from each other. We show the team this difference on screen in the training after the setup.
How do we stop a message from going to the wrong person?
The risk usually comes from the follower list: the user who creates a record or is assigned to it becomes a follower automatically, and followers are added as recipients of the message sent. If the customer is a follower, Send message reaches them too. A follower who should not receive that message has to be taken off the list before sending. We review the follower rules together during the setup.
Do we need to buy a separate service for video calls?
In most cases no; the call is established peer-to-peer with WebRTC. But if one of the attendees is behind a symmetric NAT, the connection cannot be established and an ICE server is needed. Odoo documents the configuration steps for this through a Twilio account. We test during the setup whether your network needs it.
We want only a certain team to see a channel, is that possible?
Yes. Access is set on the channel's Privacy tab, and selecting a user group in the Authorized Group field limits the channel to that group. Members of the selected group can be added to the channel as followers automatically; a user can edit their own subscription later if they want. Members can also be invited one by one from the Members tab or from the dashboard.
Can we define the texts we write often as canned responses?
Yes. A shortcut and the long text that replaces it are defined; when the user types the shortcut, the text is inserted automatically. Canned responses can be used in Live Chat, Discuss, the record chatter and WhatsApp messages. The list is managed under Discuss > Configuration > Canned Responses, and we define your recurring replies together during the setup.
Can we get notifications inside Odoo instead of by email?
Yes. Whether notifications arrive by email or inside Odoo is set per user. Notifications inside Odoo are collected in the Inbox, Starred and History lists. The chat window opens from the top-right corner in every Odoo app, so notifications can be seen from there as well. We decide which preference fits which role during the setup.
Where are the files attached to a record kept?
File attachments are kept in the record's chatter, in the same place as the messages. Any user with access to the chatter can download the attachment from there. A document that belongs to a quotation or a support record sits in the record's own history rather than in a separate folder. Someone who joins the team later reaches it from the same place.
