SMS Marketing

Credit-based bulk SMS sending and tracking

SMS Marketing

Sends bulk SMS to mailing lists or to records picked by filter, and keeps the click and unsubscribe records.

What it does

A mailing is set up the same way as in Email Marketing: you pick the recipient group, write the text, then send it immediately or schedule it. The counter in the text field shows how many SMS the message will be split into as you type. Tracking links are generated automatically for the links you put in the text. SMS credits have to be bought from Odoo before you can send.

Character and part counter

As the message is written, the screen shows how many SMS it will be split into. With the standard GSM7 characters one SMS is 160 characters, and 153 characters per part in a multi-part mailing. When the text contains a character outside that set, the message switches to UNICODE format; the limit drops to 70 characters, and to 67 in a multi-part mailing.

How credits work

Credits are bought from the Settings screen and an invoice is issued for them. Credits do not expire. All the SMS in one mailing count as a single operation: if there are not enough credits to send them all, none are sent. Badly formatted numbers are not charged; numbers that are correctly formatted but have nothing behind them do use up a credit.

Unsubscribe and blacklist

The opt-out link option on the Settings tab adds an unsubscribe link to the message. A number that clicks the link and opts out goes on the blacklist automatically. Blacklisted numbers appear under Configuration > Blacklisted Phone Numbers; they can be added and removed by hand, or imported from outside.

Recipient selection and logging

The default recipient is a mailing list; selection can also be made by setting a filter on Contacts records. Blacklisted numbers drop out of the recipient list. Every message sent is written to the chatter on that person's Contacts record, so what was sent to whom stays on the record.

ASON sets up your SMS sending with recipient filters and blacklist rules; migrates your number data after a format check, adds the opt-out link, and goes through the character count and credit use with your team before the send.

Frequently asked questions

Does using Turkish characters change the cost?

Yes. An SMS written with the standard GSM7 character set carries 160 characters, and 153 characters per part in a multi-part mailing. When the text contains a character outside that set, the message switches to UNICODE format; the limit drops to 70 characters, and to 67 in a multi-part mailing. The same text is then split into more parts and uses more credits.

How do I buy SMS credits, and do they expire?

Credits are bought from the Settings screen, and an invoice is issued for them. Credits do not expire, so a balance you have bought does not shrink while it waits. The credits used per message depend on the destination country and the message length: a message sent to Türkiye uses 0.20 credits (October 2026). The country-by-country credit list is published on Odoo's SMS pricing page.

What happens if the balance does not cover the whole mailing?

All the SMS in one mailing count as a single operation. If there are not enough credits to send them all, none are sent: the mailing does not stop halfway, it does not start at all. For large lists the balance is worth checking before sending. The counter in the text field shows how many SMS the message will be split into as you type.

Do numbers that cannot be reached still use up credits?

The difference is in the format of the number. Badly formatted numbers are not charged. Numbers that are correctly formatted but have no working line behind them do use up a credit. Blacklisted numbers, on the other hand, drop out of the recipient list beforehand; nothing is sent to them and no credit is spent.

Sending SMS in Türkiye requires an İYS record; does Odoo manage this?

The official Odoo release is not integrated with İYS (Türkiye's mandatory commercial message consent registry). Odoo keeps its own blacklist and writes the opt-outs coming from the unsubscribe link to it; that record does not take the place of the consent record in İYS. A third-party, paid İYS connector module is published on Odoo Apps. You need to work out the consent process with your regulatory advisor; ASON does not give legal opinions. If you have an İYS obligation, ASON sets up the connection on the Odoo side using the keys from the İYS integrator you work with.

How does unsubscribing work with SMS?

The opt-out link option on the Settings tab adds an unsubscribe link to the message. A number that clicks the link and opts out goes on the blacklist automatically and drops out of the recipient list for later mailings. Blacklisted numbers appear under Configuration > Blacklisted Phone Numbers; they can be added and removed by hand, or imported from outside.

Can I see what was sent to whom from the contact record?

Yes. Every message sent is written to the chatter on that person's Contacts record, so what was sent to whom stays on the record. The default recipient selection goes through a mailing list, and selection can also be made by setting a filter on Contacts records. Mailings are followed in the kanban, list, calendar and graph views.
