Building, sending and measuring bulk email

Sends bulk email to mailing lists or to records picked by filter, and keeps the opened, clicked and unsubscribe records.
What it does
You pick recipients not by assembling a list by hand but by setting conditions on records in the database: mailing list, contact, CRM lead, event registration or sales order. Once the filter is set, the screen states how many records it matches. Content is built from ready-made templates, with drag-and-drop blocks, or as plain text. A mailing moves through the Draft, In Queue, Sending and Sent states.
Recipient selection by filter
The recipient group can be a mailing list, but it can just as well be Contacts, CRM Leads/Opportunities, Event Registrations or Sales Orders. You set conditions on fields such as creation date, stage, tag, lost reason, sales team and country. The number of matching records appears on screen before the mailing goes out.
A/B testing
Different versions of the same mailing go to the percentage of recipients you set. The winning version is picked by the highest opened, clicked or replied rate, or by the leads, quotations or revenue generated. While the option is on, a recipient is mailed only once over the course of the campaign.
Unsubscribe and blacklist
The unsubscribe link takes the recipient to the subscription management page. A recipient can leave a single list, or blacklist themselves and stay out of every marketing mailing. The reason for leaving is recorded. A blacklisted address keeps receiving transactional email such as order confirmations.
Mailing results
The delivered, opened, clicked, replied and bounced rates are kept separately on the mailing card. Buttons on the card lead to the clicks, and to the opportunities, quotations and revenue they produced. The Mass Mailing Analysis screen under Reporting compares mailings on the same chart.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to build the recipient list by hand for every mailing?
No. You can pick a mailing list as the recipient, or select records directly from Contacts, CRM opportunities, event registrations or sales orders with a filter. A filter is a set of conditions; the records that match it at send time become the recipients. The screen states how many records it matches, so you see the scope before sending.
What happens when someone unsubscribes?
There are two separate cases. A recipient can leave a single mailing list; they stop receiving the mailings sent to that list and keep receiving the others. In the second case they blacklist themselves and receive no marketing mailing from the database at all. The unsubscribe link takes the recipient to the subscription management page, and the reason for leaving is recorded.
Does a blacklisted address stop receiving order confirmations too?
No, those still arrive. The blacklist stops marketing mailings only; transactional email such as order confirmations and shipping notices keeps reaching the recipient. So a customer who opts out of marketing email still gets the notices for the order they placed. Blacklisted addresses are managed under Configuration > Blacklisted Email Addresses.
What happens if I hit the daily sending limit?
When the limit is reached, the remaining mailings do not carry on by themselves the next day; the sending has to be restarted by hand. For large lists you therefore need to split the sending into batches. The limit applies not to a single app but to the total email traffic of every app in the database. The value of the limit depends on the hosting type.
Can I try two different versions of the same mailing?
Yes, that is what A/B testing is for. Different versions of the same mailing go to the percentage of recipients you set. The winning version is picked by the highest opened, clicked or replied rate, or by the leads, quotations or revenue generated. While the option is on, a recipient is mailed only once over the course of the campaign.
Can I schedule a mailing for a particular date and time?
Yes. The mailing is prepared as a draft, moved to a later time by picking a date and time, and goes into the queue. A mailing passes through the Draft, In Queue, Sending and Sent states, and the card shows which stage it is at. Before the scheduled run you can send a test mailing to the addresses you specify and check the content.
Do I need a separate tool or a designer for the email design?
No. Content is built in three ways: you pick one of the ready-made templates, lay the message out with drag-and-drop blocks, or write plain text. The block editor runs inside Odoo, so no outside design tool has to be connected. For simple announcements the plain text option is enough.
