UTM Trackers

Infrastructure that carries campaign, medium and source onto records

UTM Trackers

The infrastructure module that holds the campaign, medium and source tags added to marketing links and writes those values onto the records created.

What it does

UTM Trackers is not an app in its own right but the groundwork the marketing apps rely on. It defines three record types: Campaign, Medium and Source. The medium is the broadest (social media, email, cost per click), the source is narrower (a site name, a search engine, a particular platform), and the campaign is the narrowest. Email Marketing and Marketing Automation produce these values on their own.

Three separate record types

Campaign, Medium and Source are kept as separate lists. Because the value is picked from a list instead of typed as free text, spelling differences do not split the report. The same lists are shared across email sends, social posts and website links.

Link tracker

You enter the target address, campaign, medium and source, then generate the tagged address. The statistics section shows the total number of clicks on the link as a graph and can be narrowed with the Last Month and Last Week filters. The Link Tracker module must be installed for this screen.

Link to the marketing modules

Email Marketing and Marketing Automation add UTM values to the links they send on their own. If a visitor arrives through such a link and fills in a form, the values are written onto the record created. The same values can also be used in the visibility conditions of website building blocks.

Grouping in reports

Because campaign, medium and source sit on the record itself, they become grouping criteria in reports. Which campaign produced leads, and which medium brought more traffic, are read from the same database. No data has to be moved to a separate tracking tool.

We don't just install the module — we fit it to your business

ASON defines your campaign, medium and source lists around the marketing channels you actually use; builds tagged addresses with the link tracker, confirms the values land on the lead record, and shows your marketing team how to read the report.

Frequently asked questions

Is UTM Trackers a separate application?

No. Odoo installs it not as an application but as the infrastructure the other marketing modules rely on. The module comes in on its own when Email Marketing, Marketing Automation and Website are installed. The campaign, medium and source lists are managed through the configuration menus of those modules. The module does not open a menu of its own.

What is the difference between campaign, medium and source?

Odoo's documentation separates the three by how wide they are. The medium is the widest and describes how the link was reached: social media, email or cost per click. The source is narrower: a site name, the search engine used, or a specific social platform. The campaign is the narrowest and carries a specific campaign, contest or product name.

Does it replace Google Analytics?

No, the two do different jobs. UTM values are written onto the record in the Odoo database, so you read which campaign produced leads from Odoo's own reports. Google Analytics measures site traffic. You can use the same tags on both sides. ASON sets the naming rules up front so the names on the two sides do not drift apart.

How do I generate a tagged link?

On the link tracker screen you enter the target address, the campaign, the medium and the source, and the generate button builds the tagged address. The menu sits under Website > Site > Link Tracker. The Link Tracker module has to be installed for this screen to open. You then use the generated address in an ad, a newsletter or a social post.

Can I see how many clicks a link got?

Yes. The statistics section in the link tracker shows the total number of clicks on the link as a graph. The period is narrowed with the Last Month and Last Week filters. That number is per link; to see which campaign produced records, you look at reports grouped by the campaign field.

Do I have to add the UTM tags to emails by hand?

No. Email Marketing and Marketing Automation add UTM values to the links they send on their own. If a visitor arrives through such a link and fills in a form, the values are written onto the record created. A tagged link generated by hand is for the ads and posts that sit outside those two apps.

Can I group reports by campaign?

Yes. Because campaign, medium and source sit on the record itself, they become grouping criteria in reports. Which campaign produced leads, and which medium brought more traffic, are read from the same database. Because the value is picked from a list instead of typed as free text, spelling differences do not split the report.
