Set up a question and answer space, manage contribution with karma

Forum

A question and answer module designed for customer support and community, with a permission and moderation system based on karma points.

What it does

The forum works in two modes: in Questions mode one of the answers is marked as the 'best answer' and one answer per user is allowed, while in Discussions mode the flow is free. User permissions depend on karma points; separate thresholds are defined for asking questions, voting, editing and moderating. Karma is counted in common across all the forums and courses on the site.

Karma-based permissions

Default thresholds: 3 karma to ask and answer questions, 5 to upvote, 50 to downvote, 300 to edit all posts and 1000 to moderate. A new user who verifies their email address starts with 3 points. All thresholds can be changed from the forum configuration.

Moderation tools

The sidebar holds the To Validate, Flagged and Closed lists. A post from a user without enough karma goes for validation, and the user cannot open a new post during that time. Closing a post on the grounds of spam or offensive content deducts 100 karma points.

Tags and sorting

At most five tags are added per post; creating a new tag requires 30 karma and changing existing tags 75. The default sorting is chosen as Newest, Last Updated, Most Voted, Relevance or Answered.

Ranks and badges

Ranks are defined according to total karma; each rank is given a name, the required points, a description and an image. Badges are granted manually or automatically through challenges. Levels such as bronze, silver and gold can be added to badges.

We don't just install the module — we fit it to your business

ASON sets the forum up in Questions or Discussions mode; adjusts the thresholds for asking questions, voting, editing and moderating to the size of your community, defines the tag and rank structure, and shows your moderators the validation and closing screens.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Forum replace a support ticket system?

A forum builds a public and searchable body of knowledge; when the same question comes up again, the answer is already published. But individual, confidential or time-committed requests need the Helpdesk application, and Helpdesk is part of Enterprise. A link to the related ticket can be displayed from a forum post. Using the two together is a common setup.

What is the difference between Questions mode and Discussions mode?

The forum works in two modes. In Questions mode one answer per user is allowed and one of the answers is marked as the accepted answer; an accepted answer earns 15 karma. In Discussions mode the flow is free and the number of replies is not limited. We choose the mode at the implementation according to the purpose of the forum.

Can we open the forum to certain users only?

Yes. The privacy setting is chosen as public, logged-in users only, or specific user groups. When specific groups are selected, access stays limited to those groups. We decide together which setting fits, according to who the forum is opened to.

Can we change the karma thresholds?

Yes, all thresholds are set from the forum configuration. In a closed internal forum you can lower the thresholds so that everyone writes freely. On a public support forum, low thresholds increase the spam risk. At the implementation we propose a starting set according to the audience, and adjust it by looking at usage data.

How are spam and unsuitable posts handled?

The sidebar holds the lists of posts to validate, flagged posts and closed posts. A post from a user without enough karma goes for validation, and that user cannot open a new post in the meantime. Closing a post for spam or offensive content lowers karma by 100 points. You can define the close reasons yourselves.

Can we use ranks and badges to encourage contribution?

Yes. Ranks are defined according to total karma; each rank is given a name, the points required, a description and an image. Badges are handed out manually or automatically through challenges, and can be split into tiers such as bronze, silver and gold. Karma is counted in common across all the forums and courses on the site.

Does forum content show up in search engines?

Forum posts are published as site pages and enter sitemap.xml. Odoo adds structured data to forum posts, which allows a rich appearance in search results. Links from users with low karma get nofollow; that threshold is 500 karma by default. Indexing still depends on the search engine's decision.
