Plan shifts by role and resource, and publish them to employees
Plans employee and equipment shifts in the Gantt view and distributes open shifts automatically according to roles.
What it does
Shifts are assigned to resources; a resource can be an employee, or a non-human item such as a machine. Roles define the type of work and are taken into account by the Auto Plan feature. Shift templates set the start time and the duration in advance; recurring shifts are generated from a single record. Planning comes with the Odoo Enterprise edition and requires an Enterprise subscription.
Defining roles and resources
Roles define the type of work; property fields add further attributes such as an accreditation or a language requirement. On the employee record, work information, working hours and planning roles are entered. Non-human resources such as machines are defined as materials and planned.
Automatic planning
Open shifts are first created with their role, then distributed to suitable resources with Auto Plan. Roles are taken into account in the distribution. The Allocated Time percentage is calculated from the employee's defined working hours.
Shift templates and recurrence
A template sets the start time and the duration in advance; the same shift is not written out again each time. While creating a shift, the recurrence option generates a periodic plan. A shift can be handed over to another employee or removed from the assignment.
Notifying employees
The schedule is published to employees. Depending on the account configuration, an employee sees their shift either in a separate planning portal or in the backend screen. Switched and open shifts are followed from that screen.

Frequently asked questions
Is Planning available in Odoo Community?
No. Planning comes with the Odoo Enterprise edition; it is not part of an Odoo 19 Community installation. If you need shift planning, an Enterprise subscription is required. We weigh that decision together during the scoping work: we look at which functions you genuinely need and show the subscription cost as a separate line in the quote.
Who can edit a shift?
The planner edits a shift directly from the Gantt screen. A shift can be handed over to another employee or removed from the assignment. Who can do what is determined through access levels during the setup.
Can an employee hand their shift over to someone else?
Yes. Shift switching is supported on the employee side: an employee gives up the shift and another employee takes it on. A shift removed from the assignment becomes an open shift and can be redistributed with Auto Plan. Who holds the right to switch a shift is defined during the setup.
Can the system distribute open shifts on its own?
Yes. Open shifts are first created with their role, then distributed to suitable resources with Auto Plan; roles are taken into account in the distribution. The Allocated Time percentage is calculated from the employee's defined working hours. So the working hours have to be entered on the employee record.

That way both the technician for a job and the equipment they will use appear together on the same Gantt screen. Thanks to the property fields on roles, the skill the equipment requires can also be defined.
